Our Backstory
Helsby FC is one of the oldest amateur football clubs in Cheshire, with the club’s heritage dating back to 24th August 1895.
Local records show a victorious Helsby returning to the village railway station after winning the Liverpool District Cup in 1908.
BICC (British Insulated Callender’s Cables) established a manufacturing site in Helsby during the 1920’s, and Helsby AFC merged with the cable works team to become Helsby BI.
During the summer of 2000 the longstanding affiliation with the BICC company ended and we dropped that part of our name, henceforth playing as Helsby FC.
Now well into the second century of our existence, Helsby have played in various local leagues; the West Cheshire League, the South Wirral League and the Chester & Wirral League (formerly the Chester & District League, prior to that the Chester & Runcorn League).
Helsby BI’s most notable achievement pre-war was winning the prestigious West Cheshire League Pyke Cup in 1936, beating Buckley Town in a replay.
Between 1998 and 2023, Helsby have also won their local District FA senior cup (the Runcorn & District FA Saturday Cup) 11 times.
Retained the Runcorn and district cup in 2023 & 2024
The past 25 years represents the most successful era in the club’s history, highlights of this period being as follows:
