Paul Nicholls, known affectionately within the Helsby FC community as “Nicksy,” epitomises the spirit and dedication that grassroots football celebrates. My journey started with Helsby FC way back in the mid 1990’s where I played for many season’s, then in 2009 after sustaining a nasty knee injury I decided to start my coaching journey, coaching my son at Helsby from U8’s all the way to U18’s gaining FA qualifications along the way including FA Level 1 and 2 and FA Youth modules 1,2 and 3.

In 2021 when the new club opened I approached the club to start a Helsby FC Mini Kickers session on a Saturday morning which has been a great success and from there we now have 10 boys and 8 girls teams and a very strong Mini Kicker session going into the 2024/25 season.

I now hold the position of Junior Lead and Club Welfare Officer with the club, the future’s bright, the future is Helsby FC…

After being asked by Mike Smith to jump on board as a joint venture it was something I couldn’t resist as management was something I was looking to get into later down the line after being told that I shouldn’t play no more due to numerous knee operations, so it was a great opportunity to jump on board and start my managerial career.
The first season was in West Cheshire Division 3 which is a really tough league to get out of due to the physicality and good teams who have won other leagues so they join West Cheshire in order for tougher competition and have to start in Division 3 and work their way up. After two seasons in division 3 we eventually were crowned champions and West Cheshire Shield winners so that season completed a double. The following season a new manager was brought due to family
Commitments and that season they narrowly missed out on promotion with a 3rd place finish. After hearing the manager Dave Richards was stepping down Paul contacted me and asked if I would like to continue where I left off so with more time on my hands it was something I could commit to. With Mike Smith leaving to join Barnton I brought along with me an old friend in Alan Bond whose friendship spans for over 27 years from playing football together as juniors. In our first season back at it we managed to win west Cheshire Division 2 and also lifted the Runcorn District Cup which secured us a successful season lifting a cup double. Then moving into West Cheshire 1 we started off like a house on fire sitting 3rd st Christmas due to lads signing for teams in the NWC and NPL are goals where took out of the side and we had a rough patch from January till the end of the season some really good performances but just lacked that cutting edge in front of goal which lead us to a mid table finish. And a successful end to the season saw us lift the Runcorn District Cup. For me being a Runcorn lad it was always something that I wanted to win and to now win it twice it is something I am really proud of. So in the last 4 seasons we have managed back to back promotions to win 2 leagues and 3 cups, credit to all the lads who have been involved in the journey at Helsby FC.

I’ve been coaching kids football from u9s right the way through to the current helsby youth team, I’ve taken the lads to Holland multiple times to play on international tournaments and guided the team through the JPL this is my second year with helsby with hopefully many more as I plan to take the lads into senior football, helsby has given the lads a brilliant platform to achieve great things in the near future with the help of Jono and Paul both have been brilliant!!!
